You haven’t lived unless you’ve had at least one road trip in a tropical country. Costa Rica is home to the most picturesque scenery and vibrant culture. It has become the most popular request from my clients in the past 2 years. Destination wedding couples, honeymooners and couples seeking an adventurous vacation ask where I would recommend they go for Costa Rica. The truth is that one size just does not fit all. So if you want a Costa Rica trip itinerary, then here are my top 3 options.

Costa Rica Trip Itinerary #1: San José to La Fortuna

If you’re arriving in San José and taking a trip to La Fortuna, you’ll find that the drive is smooth and easy despite its curvy road. Plus, this trip gives you views of the beautiful national parks and stunning exotic wildlife. The Arenal Volcano is a popular tourist attraction.

It’s one of the world’s top active volcanoes and erupts once a day. Getting a glimpse of red-hot lava and columns of ash is an invaluable experience. After a long day of taking in the country’s beauty, rest at the Arenal Observatory Lodge or grab a bite at a Lava Lounge Bar and Grill.

Day 1: Arrival in San José

  • Begin with a relaxed exploration of San José’s cultural landmarks such as the National Museum or the Mercado Central for local crafts and foods.
  • I don’t recommend staying long in San Jose. It’s a very busy city, and your time is better spent in the countryside.

Day 2: Travel to La Fortuna

  • Leave early for La Fortuna, taking in the lush landscapes and occasional wildlife sightings. Plan for stops at coffee plantations, chocolate tours or scenic viewpoints to stretch and enjoy the views.

Day 3: Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs

  • Dedicate the day to exploring Arenal Volcano National Park. Start with a guided hike around the base of the volcano to learn about its geology and history. In the afternoon, unwind in the thermal hot springs, with options ranging from luxurious resorts to natural river spots.
  • Later you can visit the park at night, which turns it into a wild experience!
  • Numerous resorts will give you access to natural hot springs. While some are all-inclusive like Volcano Lodge, not all of them are. Just make sure that a visit to the hot springs is included!
  • Also, it makes an amazing honeymoon destination.

Day 4: Adventure Activities

  • Next, check out La Fortuna’s famous outdoor activities. Choose from zip-lining through the rainforest canopy, a rappelling adventure down waterfalls, or a more serene kayak trip on Lake Arenal. Even when the weather is cloudy, you can still enjoy the fun.

Day 5: Cultural Immersion

  • Next, spend the day delving into the local culture. Visit a sustainable farm to learn about Costa Rican agriculture. Additi take a cooking class to master the art of Costa Rican cuisine.

Day 6: Leisure and Exploration

  • Enjoy a leisurely day at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. Go for a guided nature walk to spot exotic birds and wildlife, or indulge in a spa treatment overlooking the volcano. It’s a day for relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings at your own pace.

Final Day: Return Journey to San José

  • Make your way back to San José, stopping en route at artisan towns like Sarchí, known for its colorful oxcarts and woodwork. It’s a chance to pick up unique souvenirs and experience more of Costa Rican culture.

Day 8: Departure

  • This is my favorite Costa Rica trip itinerary because you get to see the most popular part of the country.

Costa Rica Trip Itinerary #2: Monteverde to Playa Grande

Ok, the journey from Monteverde to Playa Grande is bumpy and steep. Still, you’ll want to try this itinerary because of the gorgeous beaches and visits from the majestic sea turtles. Playa Grande is home to the Leatherback Sea Turtles.

They lay eggs and build nests between October and March, and between April and September, the eggs hatch, and thousands of baby turtles hobble their way into the ocean.

Costa Rica Trip Itinerary #3: Tamarindo to Santa Teresa

This itinerary is for a more relaxing getaway. Take a break from sightseeing and stop at one of the sopas (small restaurants) and indulge in authentic Costa Rican cuisine, from empanadas to patacones (deep-fried, flattened plantains).

Santa Teresa is the perfect destination for both relaxation and leisure. Its idyllic white-sand beaches are great for laying down a mat doing yoga or grabbing a surfboard and catching a wave.

Costa Rica Trip Itinerary #3: For Relaxation

    Days 1-2: Arrival in Tamarindo

    • Begin your trip by exploring Tamarindo, a vibrant town known for its surf, nightlife, and beautiful beaches. Enjoy a sunset beach walk.
    • Spend another day in Tamarindo indulging in water sports or taking a surf lesson.
    • I recommend a sunset catamaran snorkel adventure.

Day 3: Travel to Santa Teresa

    • Leave Tamarindo for Santa Teresa. Keep in mind that the drive is challenging. But, it offers stunning landscapes. Stop at local sopas along the way to enjoy the scenery and authentic cuisine.

On Day 4: Santa Teresa Beach Day

    • Try to dedicate this day to relaxation and leisure at Santa Teresa’s idyllic beaches. Practice yoga on the white sand or try surfing in its renowned waves.
    • At night try a bioluminescent kayak tour!

Day 5: Santa Teresa Adventure and Relaxation

    • Explore the natural surroundings with a guided hike or continue enjoying the beach. End the day with a visit to Hotel Tropico Latino for a spa treatment.

    Days 6-7: Leisure and Departure
