Spelunking in Abaco For the Adventure Couple

If you’re looking for a day trip that combines adventure with the mystique of uncharted territory, spelunking in Abaco should top your list. Abaco is home to an intricate network of caves, many of which remain largely unexplored. The island offers a thrilling escape into the earth’s depths.

Start by descending into the Ralph’s Cave system, the jewel of Abaco’s underground wonders. This sprawling network, located in the island’s south-central region, features over a mile of underground passages. Each chamber presents its own set of challenges and wonders. Some have tight crawls but others are spacious caverns filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

It is definitely not for the claustrophobic. In case you were like me and had no clue what “spelunking” is (let alone how to pronounce it). It’s basically cave diving. Like deep, deep down. Suffice it to say that when I arrived on tour, I decided it was not for me. If you want a tour in the

Nature’s Artwork: The Geological Marvels

Exploring Abaco’s caves is like walking through a live gallery of nature’s artwork (from what I hear). The cool, damp interiors are a refuge from the tropical sun. But also is a showcase of mineral-rich formations that have been sculpted over millennia. As you navigate through Ralph’s Cave, observe the delicate ecosystems thriving in this hidden world.

Or like me, you can walk outside the caves and get a good sense of nature that way. No matter what, for a safe and informative spelunking experience, going with a guide is essential.

Beyond the Caves: Top Activities in Abaco

While the underground adventures are a must-do, Abaco offers plenty more to enrich your day trip. And since I was not about cave diving, these were more my speed. Whenever I recommend tours in The Bahamas for couples, these are my go-tos.

Sailing and Water Sports

  • Take advantage of being in the sailing capital of the Bahamas by engaging in water sports. Whether it’s windsurfing, kayaking, or sailing, the clear blue waters around Abaco provide the perfect setting.

Bird Watching at Abaco National Park

  • For nature lovers, the Abaco National Park is a sanctuary for the Abaco parrot and other migratory birds. Bring your binoculars and enjoy a serene bird-watching session.

Beach Relaxation

  • After your spelunking adventure, unwind on one of Abaco’s pristine beaches. Treasure Cay Beach, with its powdery white sand and turquoise waters, is ideal for relaxation and reflection.

Local Cuisine

  • Sample the local flavor at charming seaside restaurants. Abaco is known for its delicious seafood, so don’t miss out on dishes like conch fritters and grilled grouper.

Shark-Feeding in Bimini

If you’re seeking a truly heart-pumping experience during your time in the Bahamas, look no further than the shark-feeding excursions offered in Bimini. Here, you’ll have the chance to come face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most fascinating predators and learn about their behavior from expert guides (we can select a reputable one).

Bimini is known as the “shark capital of the world,” thanks to its proximity to the Gulf Stream and the wide variety of shark species that inhabit its waters. During a shark-feeding excursion, you’ll have the opportunity to see lemon, nurse, and reef sharks up close and personal as they swarm around the boat in search of food.

While the idea of getting up close and personal with sharks may seem scary, just know that these tours are conducted by highly trained and experienced guides who prioritize the safety of both humans and sharks. Many of the tours work with marine biologists to collect valuable data on shark behavior and population numbers.

Most shark-feeding tours in Bimini take place in shallow, crystal-clear waters that offer an unparalleled view of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Hermit Crab Races in Eleuthera

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience in the Bahamas, you absolutely cannot miss out on the hermit crab races in Eleuthera. While it may sound a bit odd at first, trust us when we say that this is one activity that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

The hermit crab races take place in Governor’s Harbour on Friday nights and are a beloved local tradition. Visitors are welcome to join in on the fun and enter their own hermit crabs in the races, or simply sit back and watch the action unfold.

So, what exactly are hermit crab races?

Essentially, they involve setting up a circular track with a start and finish line. Participants each bring their own hermit crab (which can be purchased from a local vendor) and place them in the center of the track.

Once the race begins, it’s a mad dash as the hermit crabs scurry around the circle, with the first one to cross the finish line declared the winner. The races are a festive event, with music, food, and drinks available for purchase.

Locals and visitors alike come out to watch the races and socialize, making it a great way to get a feel for Eleuthera’s vibrant community. In addition to being a fun and entertaining activity, the hermit crab races also have a deeper meaning.

Hermit crabs are known for their ability to adapt and thrive in new environments, something that is highly valued in Eleuthera’s tight-knit community. Participating in the races is a way to celebrate this resilience and embrace the island’s unique spirit.

A Must for the Bahmas For Couples: A Cooking Class in Exuma

When it comes to the Bahamas, many visitors tend to stick to the beaches, cocktails, and resorts. But for those looking to dive deeper into the culture of the islands, taking a cooking class (like this one we did) in Exuma is an experience not to be missed.

Exuma is known for its fresh seafood, colorful produce, and traditional dishes passed down through generations. And what better way to learn about this local cuisine than from the experts themselves?

Many cooking classes in Exuma are taught by experienced chefs who are passionate about showcasing the flavors of their homeland. In a typical cooking class, participants are taken on a trip to the local market to pick out fresh ingredients.

From there, you’ll be guided through the preparation of traditional dishes such as conch salad, cracked conch, and Bahamian macaroni and cheese. In addition to learning about the cuisine of the Bahamas, taking a cooking class in Exuma is a great way to connect with the local community.

The chefs leading these classes are often passionate about promoting sustainable and responsible tourism, which means supporting local businesses and farmers. By participating in a cooking class, you’re not only learning how to cook delicious dishes but also contributing to the local economy.

Bahamas For Couples Must: Swimming With The Pigs

Everything you’ve heard about swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas is true. It’s super fun, one of the best experiences to have, and our most recommended couples trip. You travel by boat to Rose Island and dive in. The local celebs (the pigs) just hang out in the water with you! We’ll dive into more here.

Just be sure to book this excursion well in advance. They sell out quickly as the tours do not allow large groups to disturb the pigs too much.

Bahamas For The Cruise Couples

Parasailing is a quick getaway tour that you can do if you are cruising. Some companies have pick-ups scheduled every 1/2 hour, so you can make sure that you have plenty of time to get back to your ship for departure!

Or, my personal favorite, a rum tour! What better way to have fun than to tour the food and spirits of the island. Most cruises will port in Nassau, which is the perfect setting for you to do a rum and food tasting tour. A lot of them are walking tours, so you’ll always have a view of your ship in the distance. It is by far the most booked tour we do for in the Bahamas for couples.

Which Hidden Gem In The Bahamas Will You Choose?

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or celebrating a special milestone, the Bahamas offers countless adventures for couples beyond the beach. From the thrilling depths of Abaco’s caves to the serene beauty of its beaches, this island paradise has something for every couple.

Immerse yourselves in the vibrant local culture, indulge in fresh seafood, and let the breathtaking landscapes of the Bahamas deepen your connection. And don’t forget, you can always contact us to get started.
